Info for Podcast Festival Passholders

Welcome to Hot Docs Podcast Festival Online! We are happy to welcome you to our growing community of audio creators and podcast lovers from January 27-29.

If you have any questions or issues streaming events and sessions, you can chat live with our team in the Live Chat, or contact us directly at [email protected]

As a passholder, you can access the Festival through the Hot Docs Podcast Festival Passholder Portal, where you can stream all live events, watch content on demand, and connect with fellow attendees.

Please note, you will be required to sign in using your email or Hot Docs username.

All content, including live event recordings, will be available for passholders On Demand until February 28, 2021. Live chat will be available throughout the Festival, from January 27-29.

FAQS

Do I need to get a ticket in advance for the live events?

Nope, passholders have access to all events and on demand sessions through the passholder portal. Simply click WATCH on any live event page at the start of the event. You can join a live event at any point during the live stream.

I missed a live event, can I watch a recorded version?

Yes, all live events will be recorded and be available on the passholder portal after its original broadcast. Please allow for up to 24 hours for the recording to become available. Note that in-event chat will not be available On Demand.

Can I watch an Event or On Demand session more than once?
Yes, you have access to all content through February 28, 2021. You can watch as many times as you like.

Will events and content be closed captioned?

Yes, all on demand content will have Closed Captioning. Click on the Captioning icon on the video to turn captions on. Live events will not be captioned live, but closed captions will be available on the event recordings 72 hours after the event wraps.

I would like to connect with other podcasters and network? Is that possible?

You can connect with other attendees throughout the Festival via our Live Chat, accessible from the passholder portal. Use the chat to discuss the Festival, recommend podcasts, talk podcasting in general, and share information about your own audio projects. The chat also allows for attendees to break out and chat one-on-one using live text, voice, and video chat.

Live chat will also be available during all live events. We encourage you to ask questions, share thoughts and ideas, and interact with panelists and other attendees.

I really liked the sound of one of the podcasts featured before a live event? Where can I hear more?

This fall, Hot Docs issued an open call across Canada for short audio clips from exciting new podcasts that showcase the best in Canadian podcasting to feature as part of this year’s Opening Act program. We selected 12 incredible shows to feature before each of our live events at this year’s Festival. You can see the full lineup of shows and learn more about them here.

How to Stream

Currently you can stream through the following web browsers: Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Opera. For both PC and Apple computers, we recommend that you use the latest version of your browser. Internet Explorer is not supported.

To watch on your television:

Hot Docs app on Apple TV (Generation 4 or higher only)
After you click to WATCH your event, you will be see the button with an option to “WATCH ON ROKU OR APPLE TV” button at the top of your stream page to access your 9-digit voucher code. Open the Hot Docs app and enter the code to stream the film.

If you do not already have the Hot Docs app downloaded, search for “Hot Docs” in the App store and click “Get the App.”

Hot Docs App on Roku
After you click to WATCH your event, you will be see the button with an option to “WATCH ON ROKU OR APPLE TV” button at the top of your stream page to access your 9-digit voucher code. Open the Hot Docs Channel and enter the code to stream the film. If you do not already have the Hot Docs app downloaded, search for “Hot Docs” in the Roku channel store and click “Add Channel.”

Note that In-Event chat will not be available if you are watching an event on Apple TV or Roku.

Screen Sharing (Chromecast & Apple TV)
You can stream films on Chromecast or Apple TV (all generations) by screen sharing your smartphone, tablet, or computer on the same Wi-Fi network. Instructions for screen sharing using your Apple TV using AirPlay can be found here. For information on screen sharing using your Chromecast, click here.

HDMI
If you have a laptop or nearby computer with an HDMI port, you can connect it directly to your television, using it as a second monitor. That said, connection details will depend on your setup. We recommend referencing your television’s manual for more information.
